The collection of 756 works of Chinese ceramics brought together by Alfred Baur has now acquired a worldwide reputation. Selected for their perfection and the harmony of their forms and decoration, these pieces, presented on two floors of the museum, give an overall idea of the history of Chinese ceramics from the Tang (618-907) to the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
Alfred Baur’s collection of slightly more than 6000 works of Japanese art was assembled over a period of some 45 years, between 1906 and 1951. Overall, the collection focuses on the years from the 18th to the early 20th century, covering the late Edo period, the Meiji and Taishô eras, as well as the first decades of the Shôwa era.
